Listed companies in 2023

The 2023 was a very good year for Italian banks listed on the main market Euronext Milan (EXM), with profits rising sharply, thanks to the large margins generated by the difference between active and passive interest rates.

Italian-banks listed on EXM reported a strong increase in earnings of 26.2 billion euros (up 67% from 2022) mainly due to improved operating results that showed strong growth in net interest income (+39% from 2022), which far outpaced the increase in operating costs. At the end of 2023, net asset of listed banks rose to 191.8 billion euros (+6% from 2022).

Italian-insurance companies listed on EXM reported a sharply upper net income of 5.4 billion euros in 2023 compared to the previous year (+66%), due to growth in net investment income (22,7 billion in 2023 vs. -9 billion in 2022) and insurance revenues (+5 billion euros compared to 2022), partially offset by an increase in insurance claims (+4.6 billion euros compared to 2022) and selling, general & administrative expenses (25.7 billion euros vs. -4.7 billion in 2022). At the end of 2023, net asset of listed insurance companies increased to 41 billion euros from 37.6 billion euros at the end of 2022.

Other Italian companies listed on EXM reported profits of about 24.9 billion euros in 2023, a year-on-year decrease of 19%. This result can be attributed to a slight deterioration in operations (with revenues down 18 percent against a 23 percent reduction in operating costs), a reduction in financial income (down 5.3 billion euros) and an increase in interest expenses (up 3.3 billion euros). At the end of 2023 net assets of other Italian companies listed on the EXM grew to 259 billion euros (+4% compared to the end of 2022).

Italian companies exchanged on EGM recorded profits of about 313 million euros in 2023, a year-on-year decrease of 27%. This result was attributable to a deterioration in operations: with revenues growing by 13 percent against a more than proportional increase in operating costs of 18 percent. At the end of 2023 net assets of Italian companies exchanged on the EGM grew to 4.7 billion euros (up 13% from the end of 2022).
