The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), the European supervisory authority for the financial markets, reports an increase in offers to retail customers of speculative products, such as contracts for differences (CFDS) and binary options, then followed by an increase in complaints received by the supervisory authorities in various countries from savers who have suffered considerable losses as a result of their purchases.

In view of this, ESMA gives a reminder of how such financial products are extremely risky, non-standardised and offered and sold under varying methods and terms and conditions by intermediaries (who also need checking to see if they are effectively authorised to provide investment services) using advertising campaigns which highlight potential profits without pointing out the risks and potential losses.

Monitoring of the supply of the above-mentioned products carried out by the European authorities, especially the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (Cysec) over the last few years has led to a number of fines on intermediaries and the revoking of their authorisation to carry on investment services.
