50 years of CONSOB: initiatives marking half a century of history
In 2024, CONSOB celebrated the 50th anniversary of its founding.
This milestone was marked by a series of initiatives retracing the Institute’s journey from its establishment in 1974 to the present day, while highlighting its role in regulating and supervising Italy’s financial markets.
The anniversary initiatives included a commemorative volume, two study conferences, an institutional communication campaign, a commemorative stamp and a commemorative coin.
Commemorative volume
In June 2024, the volume “CONSOB - 50 Years of History: Regulation and Supervision of Financial Markets from 1974 to 2024” was published.
The book recounts half a century of CONSOB’s activity, closely intertwined with the evolution of Italian and European financial markets.
It is organised into five chapters, one for each decade, offering an in-depth view of the regulatory, institutional and economic changes that have taken place over time.
Study conferences
The anniversary celebrations were enriched by two study conferences, organised in cooperation with academic institutions and dedicated to the main stages in CONSOB’s history and to the outlook for European financial markets.

Five decades in the history of financial markets
The first conference, organised in cooperation with Sapienza University of Rome, followed the structure of the commemorative volume and retraced CONSOB’s 50 years of activity.
The programme was divided into five sessions, one for each decade, focusing on the evolution of the Institute, the regulatory framework and Italian financial markets.

The challenges of European market integration
The second conference, organised in cooperation with Bocconi University in Milan, focused on the challenges posed by the evolution of financial markets and by the process of integration at European level.
The event addressed the issues facing supervisory authorities, institutions and market participants in an increasingly interconnected European financial system.
Both conferences featured the participation of representatives of Italian and European institutions, members of academia and financial market experts.
Institutional communication campaign
To mark its 50th anniversary, CONSOB launched an institutional communication campaign across radio and television.
The campaign’s informational spot highlights the Institute’s role in protecting savings, combating financial malpractice and promoting financial education.
Commemorative stamp and coin
The 50th anniversary was also marked by the issue of two commemorative items: a postage stamp and a silver coin.
The postage stamp
The postage stamp, part of the thematic series “The Excellence of Knowledge”, bears the logo of the 50th anniversary of CONSOB.
The coin
The 5-euro silver coin features, on one side, a stylised CONSOB logo and, on the other, a stock-market graph enclosed within two hands.
The image symbolises the Institute’s safeguarding role in the financial system.

The first conference, held in cooperation with Sapienza University of Rome on October 24, 2024, followed the structure of the commemorative volume, with five sessions devoted to each decade of CONSOB’s activity.
The second conference, held with Bocconi University in Milan on March 14, 2025, focused on the challenges posed by evolving financial markets and the process of integration at the European level.
Both conferences featured participation from prominent figures in national and European institutions, as well as leading academics.
